In 2022 Urban Symbiotics won a Thornton Education Trust Inspire Future Generation Award for youth community engagement for their co-designed Town Centre Masterplan for Swaffham. It was part of a High Street Heritage Action Zone for Historic England and Breckland Council.
The Thornton Education Trust Inspire Future Generation Awards (IFG) were open to practitioners, built environment professionals and the private/public sector, aiming to recognise people and initiatives working with children and young people and advocate for a better and more inclusive built environment. It recognises Urban Symbiotics’ work to ensure that young people are placed at the heart of their masterplan enhancement scheme as part of a Historic England High Street Heritage Action Zone for Swaffham.
The award recognised Urban Symbiotic’s pioneering and bespoke user-centric approach to placemaking and exploring the innovative use of insight, engagement and co-design.
The jury noted that:
‘There was a rigour and method to this engagement process which made it stand out, alongside all the creativity. If every council and developer took youth voice this seriously, we would get much better places with much more buy-in. It was hugely professional in the best sense of the word’.
Urban Symbiotics led a great and enthusiastic team with Fabrik Landscape and Quota Heritage and the community, residents and businesses of Swaffham.
